AI Revolutionising Healthcare Delivery, Experts Say

Healthcare professionals and technology experts have highlighted the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in transforming healthcare delivery, diagnosis and patient management across the world.

The experts made the observation during a health technology conference held in Abuja, where stakeholders examined the opportunities and challenges associated with AI adoption in Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Amina Yusuf, a healthcare technology specialist, said AI was increasingly becoming a valuable tool in disease detection, treatment planning and medical research.

According to her, AI-powered systems can analyse large volumes of medical data within a short time, enabling healthcare providers to make faster and more accurate decisions.

“Artificial Intelligence has the potential to improve patient outcomes by assisting doctors in diagnosing diseases at earlier stages and recommending appropriate treatment options,” she said.

Yusuf noted that AI technologies were already being deployed globally to detect conditions such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes through advanced imaging and predictive analytics.

She added that the technology could also help reduce medical errors and improve efficiency in hospitals by automating administrative processes.

Also speaking, Mr. Chinedu Okafor, a digital health consultant, said AI could play a critical role in addressing healthcare challenges in developing countries, including shortages of medical personnel and limited access to specialist care.

According to him, telemedicine platforms integrated with AI tools can extend healthcare services to remote and underserved communities.

“Many rural communities lack access to specialist doctors. AI-assisted healthcare solutions can bridge this gap and improve healthcare accessibility,” he said.

Okafor, however, stressed the need for adequate regulations to ensure ethical use of AI in healthcare.

He said concerns relating to data privacy, cybersecurity and algorithmic bias must be addressed to safeguard patient rights and maintain public trust.

Some participants at the conference called on government agencies, healthcare institutions and technology firms to collaborate in developing policies that support responsible AI adoption.

They also advocated increased investment in digital infrastructure, healthcare data management systems and capacity-building programmes for medical professionals.

Experts further noted that while AI could enhance healthcare delivery, it should complement rather than replace human healthcare workers.

According to them, medical practitioners will continue to play a vital role in patient care, empathy and complex clinical decision-making.

The stakeholders expressed optimism that with appropriate investment and regulatory frameworks, AI could significantly strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system and contribute to improved health outcomes.

They urged policymakers to prioritise innovation and digital transformation as part of broader efforts to achieve universal health coverage in the country.
