Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations on Monday opened their annual summit in the French resort town of Evian-les-Bains, with global security, economic stability and emerging technological challenges dominating discussions.
The three-day summit, hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron, brings together leaders from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan and France, alongside representatives of the European Union.
The gathering comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainties, with leaders expected to deliberate on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, developments in the Middle East, international trade issues, artificial intelligence governance and support for developing economies.
French President Macron, in his opening remarks, stressed the need for stronger international cooperation in addressing shared global challenges.
“The world is facing interconnected crises that demand coordinated responses. The G7 must continue to provide leadership in promoting peace, stability and sustainable development,” he said.
A major focus of the summit is expected to be recent diplomatic developments involving the United States and Iran, following reports of a framework agreement aimed at reducing regional hostilities in the Middle East.
The issue is anticipated to feature prominently during bilateral and multilateral meetings among participating leaders as they assess its implications for global energy markets and international security.
The war in Ukraine also remains high on the agenda, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy scheduled to engage with G7 leaders on continued support efforts and pathways toward a negotiated settlement.
Economic concerns, including inflationary pressures, supply chain resilience and reforms to global financial institutions, are likewise expected to shape discussions.
According to summit organisers, leaders will also explore strategies for addressing debt vulnerabilities affecting low- and middle-income countries, particularly in Africa and other developing regions.
Artificial intelligence and digital governance have emerged as new priorities, with policymakers seeking common frameworks to maximise the benefits of emerging technologies while mitigating associated risks.
Several invited leaders from non-G7 countries are participating in parts of the summit, reflecting efforts to broaden dialogue on issues with global implications.
Security has been heightened across the Evian region, with French authorities implementing extensive measures to safeguard delegates and participants attending the high-level meeting.
Observers say the outcomes of the summit could influence international responses to some of the world’s most pressing challenges, including conflict resolution, economic recovery and climate resilience.
The G7, established in 1975 as an informal forum for the world’s leading industrialised democracies, continues to serve as a platform for policy coordination on major global issues.
France’s hosting of the 2026 summit marks the return of the gathering to Evian-les-Bains, which previously hosted a G8 summit in 2003.
The summit is scheduled to conclude on June 17 with the adoption of joint communiqués outlining agreed priorities and commitments.
