Health professionals have emphasised that adopting simple lifestyle changes can significantly reduce high blood pressure, improving overall health and lowering the risk of life-threatening complications.
Speaking in separate interviews with the Source in Abuja, the experts described high blood pressure, medically known as Hypertension, as a “silent killer” due to its often symptomless nature and long-term impact on vital organs.
They noted that millions of Nigerians are affected, with many unaware of their condition until it leads to serious health issues such as stroke, heart disease, and kidney failure.
A consultant physician, Dr. Sadiq Bello, said one of the most effective natural methods to control blood pressure is regular physical activity.
“Engaging in moderate exercises such as brisk walking, cycling, swimming, or jogging for at least 30 minutes daily can help lower blood pressure and strengthen the heart,” he said.
He added that maintaining a healthy body weight is essential, as excess weight increases the workload on the heart and raises blood pressure levels.
On nutrition, a registered dietitian, Mrs. Ngozi Eze, advised individuals to adopt healthier eating habits, particularly by reducing salt intake and avoiding processed foods.
She recommended the DASH Diet, noting that it is specifically designed to help manage blood pressure naturally.
“The DASH diet encourages consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and low-fat dairy, while limiting sodium, sugar, and unhealthy fats,” she explained.
The experts also highlighted the importance of reducing sodium intake, noting that excessive salt consumption is a major contributor to high blood pressure.
They further advised limiting alcohol consumption and avoiding tobacco use, both of which are known to elevate blood pressure and damage blood vessels.
A clinical psychologist, Mr. Tunde Afolabi, stressed the role of stress management in controlling blood pressure.
“Chronic stress can lead to temporary spikes in blood pressure and long-term cardiovascular problems. Techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, and adequate sleep are effective in managing stress,” he said.
He also emphasised the importance of maintaining a balanced lifestyle, including proper rest and time management.
In addition, the experts encouraged regular monitoring of blood pressure levels, noting that early detection is key to preventing complications.
They urged Nigerians to prioritise preventive healthcare and make conscious efforts to adopt healthier daily habits.
Sources reports that while medication may be necessary in severe cases, natural lifestyle changes remain a cost-effective and sustainable approach to managing blood pressure.
