Purdue University Opens Applications for 2026 Fully Funded Summer Fellowship

Purdue University, United States, has opened applications for its 2026 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF), a fully funded programme open to both international and domestic undergraduate students.

Information obtained by the News indicates that the fellowship is designed to provide selected students with the opportunity to engage in intensive research activities under the mentorship of Purdue University faculty members, graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.

The summer fellowship, which will run for 11 weeks, is one of the largest undergraduate research programmes in the United States, with over 250 students reportedly participating in the 2023 edition.

According to the programme details, successful candidates will receive comprehensive financial support, including a stipend of 6,500 dollars, a housing allowance of 2,500 dollars, furnished accommodation and travel reimbursement of up to 1,000 dollars.

Participants are also expected to benefit from social engagement activities and enhanced communication and research skills during the programme.

Purdue University, a public land-grant research institution located in West Lafayette, Indiana, was established in 1869 and is widely recognised for its strength in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

The institution was ranked as the seventh most innovative national university, the eighth best engineering school and the 18th best public university in the United States in the 2025 U.S. News and World Report rankings.

Eligibility criteria for the fellowship show that applicants from all countries are welcome to apply, provided they are currently enrolled full-time in a bachelorโ€™s degree programme.

Applicants must have completed at least one academic semester or quarter before the application deadline and possess a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale or its equivalent.

The programme further requires that each participant submit a final report to their assigned supervisor at the end of the fellowship period.

Foreign participants selected for the programme will be required to apply for a J-1 visa to enable them to participate in the research fellowship in the United States.

The application deadline for the Purdue University Summer Fellowship 2026 is Jan. 15, 2026, and interested candidates are expected to submit their applications online through the official Purdue University website.

Selection of candidates will be based on academic performance, quality of application, suitability for available research projects and overall fit for the programme. Prior research experience, however, is not mandatory, as the fellowship also targets first-time applicants interested in research exposure.

The fellowship organisers advised interested students to complete their applications early and ensure that all required information is accurately provided before the deadline.
