Tinubu Commissions NRS Headquarters, Signals New Phase in Tax Reforms

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday inaugurated the ultra-modern headquarters of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) in Abuja, marking a significant milestone in the Federal Government’s ongoing fiscal and tax reform agenda.

The newly commissioned facility, located in the Central Business District of the Federal Capital Territory, is expected to serve as the operational hub for Nigeria’s restructured revenue administration system.

Speaking at the ceremony, the President described the project as a symbol of integrity, transparency, and efficiency in public revenue management, noting that the initiative aligns with his administration’s broader “Renewed Hope” economic agenda.

Tinubu emphasised that the establishment of the new headquarters goes beyond infrastructure, highlighting its role in driving a technology-driven, automated tax system designed to block leakages and improve accountability.

“Our objective is to widen the tax net without placing undue burden on citizens, while ensuring that every legitimate revenue due to the federation is collected,” he stated.

The Source reports that the NRS headquarters is a 16-storey complex comprising three towers, with capacity to accommodate about 3,000 staff, reflecting the scale of Nigeria’s evolving revenue administration structure.

The event drew high-profile attendance, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, alongside governors and key private sector stakeholders.

The commissioning also formally signals the transition from the former Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to the newly established NRS, following the enactment of the Nigeria Revenue Service Act aimed at modernising tax collection and enhancing efficiency.

In his remarks, the Executive Chairman of the NRS, Zacch Adedeji, reiterated the agency’s commitment to automation, improved taxpayer experience, and simplified compliance processes.

Stakeholders at the event described the new headquarters as a “nerve centre” for Nigeria’s fiscal operations, expressing optimism that the reforms would boost revenue generation and support national development priorities.

Analysts say the development is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s non-oil revenue drive, improve tax-to-GDP ratio, and enhance transparency in public finance management if effectively implemented.
