U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed credit for helping to halt the latest exchange of attacks between Israel and Iran, saying his intervention contributed to an immediate pause in hostilities between the two Middle Eastern rivals.
Trump made the assertion through posts on his Truth Social platform after both countries signalled a temporary halt to their recent missile and air strikes.
According to international media reports, Trump urged both sides to cease military action, declaring that Israel and Iran were seeking an “immediate ceasefire” while negotiations aimed at securing a broader peace agreement continued.
The latest round of violence marked one of the most significant direct confrontations between the two countries since an earlier ceasefire arrangement was reached in April.
Iran launched missile attacks against Israel, describing them as retaliation for Israeli strikes linked to Iranian-backed Hezbollah positions in Lebanon. Israel subsequently carried out retaliatory strikes targeting facilities inside Iran.
However, following Trump’s public appeal for both nations to “stop shooting,” officials from Iran and Israel indicated that they were suspending further attacks, although each side warned that renewed aggression would trigger a forceful response.
Iran’s military announced that its operations against Israel had been halted but cautioned that further Israeli actions, particularly in Lebanon, could provoke a “more severe and crushing” reaction.
Similarly, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said military operations against Iran had been placed “on hold,” while emphasising Israel’s right to self-defence should hostilities resume.
Trump, who has repeatedly portrayed himself as a peacemaker in international affairs, suggested that final negotiations aimed at achieving a more lasting settlement were underway.
“Both sides, Israel and Iran, are looking to do an immediate ceasefire,” Trump reportedly stated, adding that peace efforts should not be derailed by “ignorance or stupidity.”
Analysts, however, cautioned that the pause in fighting remains fragile, as longstanding tensions involving Iran, Israel and armed groups operating across the region continue to threaten stability.
The renewed confrontation had sparked concerns among world leaders over the possibility of a wider regional conflict, while global markets reacted nervously amid fears of disruptions to oil supplies and international shipping routes.
Diplomatic efforts involving the United States and other international stakeholders are expected to continue in an attempt to consolidate the cessation of hostilities and prevent another escalation.
Observers note that while Trump’s claims underscore Washington’s continued influence in Middle Eastern diplomacy, the durability of any ceasefire will ultimately depend on the willingness of all parties to adhere to negotiated commitments.
As of the time of filing this report, no formal comprehensive peace agreement between Israel and Iran had been announced.
