The Federal Government has unveiled plans to implement a nationwide Digital Television (TV) Switch Over project as part of efforts to modernise Nigeria’s broadcasting industry and improve access to quality digital content.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this at a media briefing on Friday in Abuja, stating that the initiative would accelerate Nigeria’s transition from analogue to digital broadcasting.
Idris said the Digital Switch Over (DSO) project would enhance picture and sound quality, increase the number of available channels, and open up new opportunities for content creators and broadcasters.
He explained that the rollout would be carried out in phases across the country to ensure a seamless transition for households and industry stakeholders.
“The nationwide Digital TV Switch Over is a critical step toward aligning Nigeria’s broadcasting sector with global best practices. It will also create jobs and stimulate growth in the creative economy,” he said.
The minister noted that the Federal Government was working closely with the National Broadcasting Commission to ensure effective regulation and implementation of the project.
He added that affordable set-top boxes would be made available to Nigerians, particularly in rural and underserved areas, to ensure no household was left behind in the transition.
Also speaking, the Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission, Mr. Charles Ebuebu, said public sensitisation campaigns would be intensified to educate citizens on the benefits of digital broadcasting and how to access the service.
Ebuebu stated that pilot phases conducted in selected states had provided valuable insights that would guide the nationwide rollout.
He emphasised that the transition would free up spectrum for telecommunications services, thereby supporting broadband expansion and digital connectivity.
Stakeholders in the media industry have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a major step toward revitalising Nigeria’s broadcast sector.
A media analyst, Mr. Tunde Balogun, said the project would boost local content production and increase competition among broadcasters.
“The switch to digital broadcasting will expand viewing options and create room for diverse programming that reflects Nigeria’s rich cultural landscape,” he said.
The Sources reports that the Digital Switch Over project aligns with global standards recommended by the International Telecommunication Union.
Observers say sustained awareness, affordability of equipment, and collaboration among stakeholders will be key to the successful implementation of the initiative nationwide.
